Background of the study
Nigerian English is a dynamic linguistic system shaped by a multitude of sociolinguistic factors such as education, social class, and professional context. Among professionals, syntactic choices in Nigerian English often reflect a blend of formal conventions and local influences. This study explores how sociolinguistic variables—such as identity, prestige, and context—affect syntactic decisions in professional discourse. Empirical observations indicate that professionals tailor their sentence structures to meet the demands of formal communication while also incorporating elements of local expression (Ibrahim, 2023). Factors including workplace hierarchy, media exposure, and peer influence contribute to innovative syntactic forms that deviate from standard norms. The research utilizes recorded meetings, interviews, and written documents to analyze how syntactic choices are negotiated in professional settings. By linking sociolinguistic theory with syntactic analysis, the study aims to reveal how language functions as a tool for both identity construction and effective communication in Nigerian professional environments (Obi, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Although sociolinguistic factors are recognized as influential in shaping language use, little systematic research has focused on their specific impact on syntactic choices in Nigerian English among professionals. Preliminary data suggest significant variation in syntactic constructions linked to social factors, yet the mechanisms remain underexplored (Chinedu, 2023). This study seeks to fill this gap by analyzing how these factors drive syntactic variation.

Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it bridges sociolinguistic theory and syntactic analysis, offering insights into the factors shaping Nigerian English among professionals. Its findings will benefit language educators, policymakers, and business communicators by promoting clearer and culturally relevant communication (Okeke, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to examining the effect of sociolinguistic factors on syntactic choices in Nigerian English among professionals. It does not include other language varieties or informal registers.
